This is one of the earliest sketches of Ryoan, didn't get her eyes yet. In earlier script, her story would follow her fall from a naive young girl to a very dark place. Fellow artist Tintin Pantoja read the script back in SVA in 2005, and commented about how weak and submissive her character was. I felt she hit it right at the mark, this was exactly what Ryoan was refusing to take up -- tradition, gender roles, patriarchy. In the final version, she became feisty and spirited from the get-go, a force of nature and I immediately fell in love with her.
